Real DISTEMPER
We only make the genuine one coat, traditional finish for plaster
ceilings and walls indoors (not to be confused with modern 'oil-bound
distemper' or 'water paint'). The velvety appearance and high light
refraction of real distemper is very special. Available in a wide
range of traditional tints and colours. Unsuitable for bathrooms,
washrooms, small kitchens and other areas subject to steam or damp.
Drying time: +/- 8 hours.

Real OIL PAINTS
Manufactured to historic standards using only traditional ingredients
and recipes. Applied by brush. On new timber, Pink Primer followed
by Hard Stopping and a Base Coat is recommended before applying
Undercoat and Oil Finishing or Oil Gloss Finishing. Available in
a wide range of traditional tints and colours.
Drying time: Touch dry +/- 72 hours.
Coverage: 10 sq.m./litre
Containers: 2.5 litre tins.
Real LEAD PAINT
For restoration and maintenance of historic textures and finishes
on Grade I and II* Listed Buildings and Scheduled Ancient Monuments,
genuine lead paints are unsurpassed for permeability, long term
protection and beauty. We hold an archive of historic formulae dating
back to antiquity, by which we can make and supply historic tints
and colours using the ingredients and manufacture methods recommended
by tradition. We also manufacture stack made white lead to order
so that the historic texture and finish of important historic rooms,
furniture and works of art can also be restored. Restricted by Law
- subject to declaration on a special form (which we can supply)
and confirmation of listing by English Heritage, Historic Scotland
or Cadw, prior to use.

Real JAPAN BLACK
The traditional, thin glossy black coating used on historic locks,
handles, bolts, hinges, tin ware, etc. All rust and modern paint
should be removed prior to application.

Coverage: +/- 12 sq. metres per litre.

Real LIME WASH
Based on our best pit-slaked and matured lime putty and manufactured
to historic recipes and standards of the old tradition, we supply
both LIME WASH WITH TALLOW for outdoors and LIME WASH WITH CASEIN
for indoors. Available in natural white and a wide range of tints.
Drying time: Touch dry +/- 12 hours.

Real COLOURWASH in Traditional
Colours
Traditionally used to unify the colour of brickwork, especially
in association with 'tuck pointing', it can also be used on a wide
range of outdoor surfaces, including cement renders. Colourwash
was frequently used on the exterior of cottages where lime was not
readily available. We can match to most brick and stone colours.
A wide range of traditional tints and colours is available.

Real GRAINING COLOUR
We manufacture traditional oil glazes for graining, incorporating
only the best traditional materials and manufactured to historic
standards of excellence. Made to order in traditional wainscot,
mahogany, cherry wood and walnut tree grain colours. We can also
supply the appropriate traditional ground colours in OIL PAINT.

Real MARBLING COLOUR
We supply traditional oil glazes in historic marble colours for
marbling. We can also supply the appropriate ground colours in oil
paint, based on traditional pigments and formulae, manufactured
to historic standards of excellence.

Real RED LEAD PRIMER
The traditional primer for ironwork above water, manufactured to
the historic standards. Application by brush should be liberal and
not pulled out as much as topcoats. Red lead primer should be applied
before stopping or filling and base coat should be applied as soon
as touch-dry.
Drying time: Touch-dry +/- 48 hours
Coverage: +/- 10 square metres per litre
Containers: 5 litre tubs or 1 litre tins only.
Real BRUNSWICK GREEN
The traditional water-resistant coating for cast iron railings,
balconies, etc. Available in Light, Middle or Deep Brunswick Green.
Normally applied in two coats over old work; over a Red Lead Primer
and a Base Coat if new. Drying time: Touch-dry 36 hours. The Lead
at Work Regulations apply to use of this product.

Real BRUNSWICK BLACK
The traditional water-resistant coating for cast iron rainwater
goods, etc. It has a glossy, brown-black finish. Contains litharge
(lead monoxide). Normally applied in two coats over RED LEAD PRIMER
and in better work finished with BLACK JAPAN. Drying time: Touch-dry
3 hours. The Lead at Work Regulations apply to use of this product.

Real TAR COATINGS
We supply either Pine Tar or Coal coatings of the old tradition
for painting timber sheds, etc. Pine Tar is slightly more brown
in appearance than black coal tar. Both allow timber to breathe.

Real CARRIAGE PAINTS
We manufacture and supply most of the paints and colours used on
historic carriages, horse-drawn and railway types, subject to law
and regulations. We hold an extensive archive of formulae for oil
paints, japans, varnishes and colours of the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries.

Real MARINE PAINTS

old ships, boats, other marine vessels and in dockyards, subject

Real SPAR VARNISH
A traditional, tough varnish based on Chinese tung oil, used for
protecting wooden boats, masts and spars on yachts, and woodwork
outdoors generally. Application is usually by brush. Two to three
coats are normally applied.
